Several unions and co-operatives unite staff at the Marien Ngouabi University around activities in defense of workers’ interest as well as around sport-related activities. There are two unions that are notable for the large number of members: the National University Union (NUU) and the National Union of Teachers in Higher Education Teachers (NUTHE).
NUU, between advocacy and support
A social advocacy and social support, NUU is one of three unions Marien Ngouabi University along with the National Union of Teachers in Higher Education and the Union of Non-Teaching Staff. The Union was formed on June 10, 1991 during the Sovereign National Conference. NUU campaigns for safeguarding the interests of the university workers and works with the following operating bodies: national congress, the national committee, the national executive committee, and the Audit and Evaluation Commission.
NUU’s tasks include fighting to defend the interests of workers, preservation of the university‘s heritage, training and development of teachers and non-teachers and the resolution of difficulties in the higher education sector in Congo. In performing its duties, NUU relies on its operating bodies with various tasks: the National Council (deliberative body in between conferences, meets twice a year), the National Executive Committee (executive body elected by the National Council consists of 10 members, 3 year terms) and the Audit and Evaluation Commission (monitoring body composed of 4 members mandate. 3 years). All are tasked with defending the victims of social-professional injustice, with support from the Secretariat for Legal Affairs.
The National Union of Teachers in Higher Education (NUTHE)
The National Union of Teachers in Higher Education was established on April 12, 1995 following a general meeting of the permanent instructors at the Marien Ngouabi University. NUTHE’s system is based on democratic processes characterized by political pluralism, trade union pluralism, and freedom of expression. These have served to create an active union in service of the needs of researchers and instructors at the Marien Ngouabi University.

- defend the material and moral interests of faculty of the Marien Ngouabi University;
- defend union rights.
